INTRODUCTION

What is a Permanent Account Number (PAN)?

Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a unique 10-digit alphanumeric identifier issued by the Income Tax Department of India. It is assigned to every taxpayer—individuals as well as business entities—by the Revenue Department to help track financial transactions and ensure tax compliance.

While applying for a PAN card is technically optional, it becomes mandatory for various transactions that cross specified financial thresholds. Quoting your PAN is required when making high-value financial transactions, filing income tax returns, or opening a bank account. Additionally, all business entities must apply for a PAN card within 30 days of incorporation or formation to remain compliant under the Income Tax Act.

Advantage

Requirements of a Permanent Account Number (PAN)

Compulsory for Opening Bank Accounts

Every individual or business owner who wants to open a savings or current bank account must provide certain KYC documents — among which the PAN card is one of the most essential.

Mandatory for Filing Income Tax Returns (ITR)

Quoting your Permanent Account Number is compulsory when filing income tax returns for individuals and businesses. All information filed is linked to your PAN, which helps the Income Tax Department track, assess, and process your returns faster.

Accepted as a National Identity Proof

A PAN card is widely accepted as valid identity proof for individuals as well as businesses. Whether you’re opening a bank account or applying for government registrations, your PAN card serves as a primary document.

For TDS and TCS Transactions

Any person responsible for deducting or collecting tax at source must quote both their own PAN and the PAN of the deductee. By quoting PAN, tax credits get linked directly to the concerned person’s account.

Mandatory in Specified Transactions

The government has specified certain high-value transactions where quoting your PAN is mandatory — such as property purchases, large bank deposits, utility bill payments above specified limits, and more.

Any Indian citizen — including minors — can apply for a Permanent Account Number (PAN) by providing valid proof and supporting documents. Foreign individuals and entities with income sources in India can also apply for PAN allotment.

Yes. Every business entity registered in India must apply for a PAN card (online or offline) within 30 days of establishment. However, a sole proprietorship firm does not need a separate PAN since it does not have a distinct legal identity apart from its owner — the proprietor’s personal PAN is used instead.

Once the PAN application is submitted and verified, it usually takes 5–7 working days for the number to be allotted. Delivery of the physical PAN card may take additional time depending on postal service.

A PAN card, once issued, is valid for a lifetime for both individuals and business entities. However, if a business entity is dissolved or permanently closed, the PAN must be surrendered to the Income Tax Department.

No. An individual or entity cannot hold more than one PAN card. Holding multiple PANs is illegal and can attract a penalty of ₹10,000 under Section 272B of the Income Tax Act. If you have more than one PAN, you must surrender the duplicate immediately.
