INTRODUCTION
✅ What is a Tax Account Number (TAN)?
A Tax Account Number (TAN) — also known as Tax Deduction Account Number (TDAN) or Tax Collection Account Number (TCAN) — is a unique 10-digit alphanumeric code issued by the Income Tax Department of India.
It must be obtained by any person or business responsible for deducting or collecting tax at source (TDS/TCS). For example, businesses that deduct employee salaries, contractor payments, or rent must quote their TAN on all related statements, challans, and returns.
Quoting a valid TAN is mandatory for:
Deducting or collecting tax at source (TDS/TCS)
Filing TDS/TCS returns
Issuing TDS certificates
Making TDS/TCS payments
Advantage
✅ Why is TAN Required?
Mandatory for Tax Deduction & Collection
Certain transactions like salaries, interest, or contractor payments require tax deduction/collection at source. TAN must be quoted in all such cases.
TDS Certificates & Filing
Any person or business deducting TDS must issue a TDS certificate quoting their TAN. TAN is also required while submitting quarterly TDS/TCS returns.
